The younger sun Yuriy twice held the office of hetman. His daughter Katerina was married to O. Vigovsky, and after his death in Muscovite she married Hetman Teteria. Khmelnitsky’s line died out at the end of the 17th century. Khmelnitsky was buried on 25 August 1657 in St. Elijah’s Church in Subotiv which he himself had built.
The day we celebrate Christ’s rising from the dead is called Easter. It is always on Sunday and Sunday is always either in late March, April or early May. But without a calendar we cannot tell what Sunday Easter will fall on. The date depends on when the Moon is full in those months. Easter can never be earlier than March 22. It can never be later than May 5. To many people Easter means the coming of spring. In spring trees send out new leaves. Birds build nests and hatch out their eggs. We colour Easter eggs and give them to our friends, as a way of saying, “Spring is here”. Ukrainian Easter follows Great Lent, a time during which rich foods are usually forgone or eaten sparingly. To mark the end of this fasting period, and particularly to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ, worshipers arrange special foods in a basket which they take to church on Easter, morning for blessing.
These foods may include ham, sausage, seasonings, cheese, butter, “paska” (a sweet cylindrical bread), eggs, cottage cheese, salt, horseradish, beetradish, and onions. Of special significance is the decorated Easter egg “pysanka” which symbolizes life, while its decorative themes may portray health, happiness, fertility, prosperity, and so on.
